AbstractTwo types of the simultaneous SHS-densification proce8ses, i.e. electro-thermal explosion-pressing (ETEP) and SHS-pseudo isostatic pressing (SHS-PIP) processes were successfully utilised to produce dense TiC-Al2O3 ceramics. For SHS-PIP process, the introduction of highly exothermically Ti-C-Ni additive is advantageous to the densification of the TiC-Al2O3 ceramics derived from the low exothermic system of TiO2-Al-C. The microstructure of the multiphase ceramics was examined by XRD, SEM and TEM. The unique river-like or vertical pattern and wave-like pattern, which are related to the unusual SHS process of phase formation, are observed in the ceramics.
