AbstractA coarse material with narrow size distribution and low particle breakage is preferred in the Sinter Process. The particle size and attrition index of gibbsite particles has been investigated through adding seeds to sodium aluminate liquors. All results were explained by analyzing the data obtained at the conditions with and without adding seed. It is shown that the average size of product is influenced by that of seed, but this effect is related to seed type and seed ratio. The image analysis of the micrographs indicates that the seeded product is not chain like agglomerates, but polycrystalline with "mosaic" dense structure, as a result the precipitated gibbsite presents an increase in strength by 5-40% in the relative value. Due to seeds remarkable roles in the carbonization process, the process variables suitable for improving the product granularity and strength has been determined through the orthogonal experiment.
