Abstract

A thermodynamic model for calculating the mass action concentrations of structural units in Fe-Al binary melts based on the atom-molecule coexistence theory, i.e., AMCT-N-i model, has been developed and verified through comparing with the reported activities of both Al and Fe in Fe-Al binary melts in a temperature from 1 573 K to 1 873 K by different researchers. The calculated mass action concentration N-Al of Al or N-Fe of Fe can be applied to ideally substitute the measured activity a(R, Al) of Al or a(R, Fe) of Fe relative to pure liquid AI(I) or Fe(I) as standard state in Fe-Al binary melts. The following equations were derived for the activity coefficient of Al in natural logarithmic form In gamma(Al) and the calculated activity coefficient of Fe in natural logarithmic form In gamma(Fe) in the temperature range from 1 573 K to 1 873 K.
