AbstractThe steric effect of organophosphorous acid (OPA) extractants with the structure of R(R')P(O)OH plays an important role in the selectivity for different metals. Until now, there is no widely accepted structure parameter to describe the effect. It is suggested in the present paper to take the angle between the two substituting groups and the phosphorus atom, angle RPR' as the steric parameter of the extractants. For extracted coordination compounds with an octahedral configurations, the substituting groups from two coordinated OPA are approximately in the same plane, thus the larger the angle angle RPR', the larger the interaction between them, resulting in a greater steric effect. In a tetrahedral configuration, the substituting groups are located in two perpendicular planes, and the interaction is much weaker. When Co2+ is extracted by OPA, the change of the thermodynamic parameters in the conversion of the octahedral to the tetrahedral configuration of the extracted cobalt complex is in accordance with the change of angle RPR'.; The steric effect of organophosphorous acid (OPA) extractants with the structure of R(R')P(O)OH plays an important role in the selectivity for different metals.
