AbstractWall shear rates in large amplitude unsteady flows that cause flow reversal can be measured by using two rectangular electrodes in a sandwich arrangement. The frequency response of this sandwich probe is studied numerically. An inverse mass transfer method is applied to recover the instantaneous shear rate from the measured difference in the mass transfer rate to the two segments. Experimental results for a turbulent pipe flow with imposed large amplitude sinusoidal oscillations are used to test the method.
